Mum's controversial parenting rules sparks debate - including paying rent at 16

There's no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to raising a child.

Not every adult and every child are the same, nor is every situation the same, which means it can't be treated in the same way.

Mum-of-three Fawna divided opinions on TikTok over her controversial parenting style which included making her children pay rent at 16, and letting them swear.

Fawna, who goes under the username @tru_n8v on the platform, listed the rules she has in a stitch with another TikToker @kathleen.jernigan who asked users to share parenting rules that other people might not agree with.

"I might lose some followers and probably get some hate but you know, it is what it is," says the mum.

Warning strong language.

Fawna then goes through the four rules she has that may be quite controversial to some, they include:

"In my house, at the age of 13, you're allowed to cuss, as long as you use it in the proper context and you do not disrespect adults," she says.

"You WILL say Ma'am, you WILL say Sir, you WILL be respectful.

"When my kids were little, I would get their breakfast and everything ready in the morning and yes, they would be taken care of they, were f**king fine, happy and healthy... but none of them are allowed to bother me, touch me, nothing until I've had my first cup of coffee."

She adds that yes, her kids do follow this rule and they are absolutely fine with it.

"At the age of 16, they're required to get a job, a driver's license and they have to start paying rent," she continues.

The rent money will be put aside until they're ready to move out, she explains. Then she will gift it back to them so they have a "little nest egg" to help get themselves set up.

Since being posted, Fawna's video has been viewed more than 666,000 times and has attracted more than 2,600 comments.

One person said: "My Daughter is 14 and we let her cuss as long as she doesn’t do it excessively or disrespectfully to us."

Another wrote: "Honestly this is a really good idea and really smart."

"And trust me parents know when you decide to cuss 'disrespectfully,' they are very different contexts," assured a third.

Someone else added: "LOVE that you set early morning boundaries. That is such a good idea for your own mental health and space."

But the rule that really got people talking was the one about her charging her kid's rent. While a number of people agreed with Fawna and said they were keen to do the same when their children were old enough, others weren't so sure.

One person said: "The only thing I PERSONALLY don't like about the rent thing is that as a parent it's our job to provide for them we are supposed to save money for them."

Another user put: "Hm, I like the rent idea. Makes them responsible with their $$."

"Rent rule is genius," said a third.
