Mum's Christmas made after unexpected guests knock on her door

Three little girls ‘warmed the heart’ of a mum who was lacking the Christmas spirit after knocking on her front door.

Sarah Helen Shepherd, 45, said she had been struggling to get into the Christmas spirit this year due to the uncertainty of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

On Monday evening at around 5.30pm, Sarah was cooking tea for herself and her six-year-old son Evan when she heard a knock on the front door of their St Helens home.

Sarah, who lives on the Rolling Mill Estate in Sutton, opened the front door to a group of three little girls who stood in front of her holding a piece of paper.

Sarah told the ECHO : “There was a knock on the door, I opened it and there were three young girls there, aged between five and eight I'd say.

“Once I opened the door they stood there for a few seconds and I noticed they had an A4 piece of paper in front of them, so I quickly realised they were going to read from their paper.

“They then burst into song singing Jingle Bells.”

Sarah said Evan ran to the door to see what was happening and his reaction was “beautiful”.

The 45-year-old said: “My son came running to the door once he heard them singing, his face was beautiful, just full of excitement.

“I don't think he's seen carol singers before.”

The mum-of-one said she had gone to get some money to give to the little girls but a lady supervising them said they didn’t want anything as they were out simply to “spread some cheer”.

The three girls continued their song which encouraged Sarah and Evan to join in and dance along putting a smile on the mum’s face.

Sarah said: “The best part was once they finished their carol they shouted ‘Merry Christmas’ while waving their arms in the air.

“You could hear the excitement in their voices.

“I told them they had absolutely made my Christmas and I hadn't seen carol singers going door to door since I was little.”

The girls skipped away from the door and Evan told his mum that the singers were the “nicest thing ever” after never witnessing anything like it before.

Prior to the carol singers Sarah had lacked any excitement for Christmas this year, but that changed after Monday’s event.

Sarah said: “I can honestly say I really didn't feel the Christmas spirit with everything that is happening at the moment, but those three little girls not only made us smile but absolutely warmed my heart.

“It was so nice to see children enjoying bringing others joy and obviously knowing the meaning of sharing love and helping others even if in the smallest way.

“What they gave us, money can't buy and my little boy hasn't stopped speaking about it, even telling his friends in the school line the morning after.

“I honestly hope they really know how much this means to us.”

The singers impacted Sarah so much that she took to Facebook to tell others about what had happened.

She wrote: “A big thank you to the three little girls that came singing Christmas carols on Rolling Mill Estate, Sutton, last night - Spinners drive.

"You have made both mine and my little boys Christmas. What an absolute credit to your parents you are.

"Wishing you a very merry Christmas.”
