Mum's car set upon by masked teens as she waited at traffic lights with her two young children

A mum was left 'terrified' after a group of masked teenagers tried to smash through the window of her car with a rock as she waited at traffic lights with her two young children.

Kade Ferguson, 19, and Dylan Irvine, 18, have now been sentenced in court for their part in the 'horrendous incident'.

The victim was waiting at traffic lights on Middleton Road in Blackley when the front window of her Audi SQ5 was suddenly smashed through, Manchester Crown Court heard.

Her two children - who were seven and three years old at the time of the incident on May 18 last year - were sat in the back of the vehicle.

Three men wearing balaclavas tried to smash her car windows in with a rock, before running away when the traffic lights changed.

Prosecutor Peter Cadwallader told the court how one of these males was suspected to be Kade Ferguson, who was 18 at the time.

The group made off from the scene in a getaway car driven by then 17-year-old Dylan Irvine, the court heard.

This car, a Dacia Sandero, had been stolen from a secure car park two days prior to the attempted robbery and was being driven on false plates.

In a victim personal statement, the mother said the incident was 'terrifying'.

"It was a horrendous experience," she told the court.

"If they had managed to smash my windows I have no doubt they would have taken my car with my children inside.

"It has made me a more nervous and I now very rarely drive without my husband in the car."

Just minutes after this incident, the same group - including Ferguson and Irvine - attempted to rob a mobile shop on Broughton Lane in Cheetham Hill.

Ferguson and two others demanded that the owner of Star Mobiles hand over phones and valuables to them inside the shop.

They stole a laptop before fleeing the scene in the stolen getaway car, again driven by Irvine.

The other males involved in these incidents are yet to be sentenced, the court heard.

Ferguson was also involved in a house burglary in March last year where more than £8,000 worth of possessions were stolen from a family home in Prestwich.

DNA evidence from blood inside the house linked him to the burglary.

Defending him, Sara Haque said her client - who has 13 previous convictions - became involved in criminality after 'getting himself way in above his head'.

"His best mitigation in this case is his age. He was just 18 years old at the time", Ms Haque said.

"The other defendants in this case are much older males."

Ferguson, of Rochdale Road, Blackley, admitted robbery, attempted robbery and burglary of dwelling.

Sentencing him to four years detention in a young offenders institution, Judge Richard Mansell told him: "It's a real sadness to see a young lad like you having to waste your young life in custody.

"You will have to make the choice at the end of your sentence whether you want to go back to living this kind of existence or whether you want to turn your life around."

Irvine, of Brinsworth Drive, Cheetham Hill, pleaded guilty to handling a stolen car, attempted robbery and robbery.

He was sentenced to a youth rehabilitation order for two years, which includes 100 hours of unpaid work and 30 rehabilitation activity requirement days.

Judge Mansell told Irvine: "If you mess up this chance I'm giving you today, you will find yourself going into prison.

"But you have not committed any crimes before and were 17 at the time this offence was committed.

"You played the most limited role, recruited to play the role as getaway driver."
