Mum's agony as school changes 'risk life' of daughter born with organs back to front

The mum of a girl born with her organs back to front or in the wrong place claims “failure after failure” in Scotland’s education system is putting her daughter’s life at risk.

Seven-year-old suffers from right atrial isomerism and has two right lungs, a heart on the wrong side of her body with six
major defects, no spleen and a host of other serious health problems.

But her mum Lyndsey, who describes Evie as a “little miracle”, has hit out after a pupil support assistant at Saline School in Fife – who was a “lifeline” for the youngster – was axed before the summer break.

Evie was given just a 20 per cent chance of reaching her first birthday and is the oldest child with her combination of illnesses to survive without surgery.

But Lyndsey and husband Ruaridh, of Blairhall, believe the youngster’s battle is being hampered by “discrimination” at school and has called for changes to the education system.

The mum has set up a petition demanding more is done to help pupils with additional needs.

She claimed the school is putting “the annual budget before Evie’s basic right to stay alive”. Lyndsey said: “Evie came home one day and said she had lettuce and cucumber for lunch.

“What are they doing allowing her to eat that when this is a child on a high-calorie diet?

“And the other week, I sent her to school with sunscreen because her medication makes her burn easily, and she said no one put it on her.

“These decisions are putting Evie’s life at risk, without a doubt. It’s discrimination.”

Fife Council’s education manager Gordon Wardrope, said: “We aim to get it right for every child to give our pupils the best learning
experience possible.”
