A mum has been hailed a "genius" after sharing the 89p hack that saved her from having to buy her daughter a new pair of school shoes after just three weeks.
Veronique McDermott noticed five-year-old Brooke's black shoes had huge scuffs on the toes which had taken away the coating and the mum was understandably reluctant to buy a new pair so soon.
After she had attempted to cover up the damage with nail polish and a Sharpie pen, Veronique discovered black electrical tape was perfect for the job - and says "not a single person has noticed" her homemade repair, as reported by Manchester Evening News.
The DIY hack lasted 'months' and Veronique is now using the same repair again to get even more life out of the £12 school shoes.

Sharing the idea with the 1.1 million members of the Family Lowdown Tips & Ideas Facebook group, she wrote: "When I bought my kid's first pair of school shoes within three weeks she had damaged the toes which looked horrible but I couldn't bring myself to buy another pair knowing the shoes still had loads of life in them.
"So I thought I'd tape the toes with electric wire tape. They lasted ages and I've now done the second round on the same pair. Ready to last hopefully another few months!"
The mum posted before and after pictures of Brooke's shoes and other members loved her solution, as one labelled the hack a "game-changer".

And another raved: "I'm on my third now at school and this is actual genius lol!! So simple and I’ve never thought to do this! Thank you!"
Veronique said no one had spotted her shoe repair and said when she pointed it out they were "all shocked at how it appears to be the original bought shoes".
She added: "I was disgusted with the idea of throwing away nearly new shoes and thought of loads of different ways to rescue them.
"I tried nail polish and Sharpie and it didn't last or looked really obvious. I saw the tape and thought to try it and it looked amazing.
"When my friend asked if I could do the same with her daughters shoes I realised other mums might find it useful. So I shared on the group not expecting such a huge response."
