Mum ridiculed for Pancake Day blunder as egg shortage in full swing

One woman has been ridiculed online for leaving Pancake Day supplies until the last minute, due to a nationwide egg shortage.

Ultimately, the egg shortage is down to supply issues, following an outbreak of Avian flu in the UK. This has been an ongoing issue for a number of months now, with various supermarkets running out of eggs back in late 2022. However, one woman took to popular online forum, Mumsnet, to complain about the lack of eggs in her local store as she shopped for supplies on Pancake Day.

Writing on the page, she titled the post, "No eggs on Pancake day!!", and wrote: "Just been to Tesco before work and there are literally NO eggs..... not even the really expensive ones they do...

"I am now going to make dear husband go to every single shop until he finds some, as the day cannot end until we've had pancakes!"

And following this post, the comments went mad with people ridiculing the woman for leaving things until the last minute.

One Mumsnet user wrote: "I think most people would have gotten their eggs earlier this year due to the huge shortages. I'm surprised you've only just realised that getting hold of eggs might be a problem.

"Your best bet in my experience is to try local small corner shops."

Another said: "Gently, eggs have been in short supply for months now and pancake day is a very predictable point of high demand for them, so waiting until the day to get eggs in was a recipe for exactly this situation."

And a third wrote: "You left it a bit last minute so I don't think it's fair to complain about this. See if there's any of that ready made mix about."

More comments showed off, saying: "We’ve inadvertently got about 25 in our fridge. I order them every week but they’ve backed up without me realising. It’s kind of risky leaving it until the actual day. Like trying to find an advent calendar on 1 December."

However, one person stuck up for the woman, writing: "Some daft replies here. Of course the original poster isn’t unreasonable to think that shops might have eggs in stock, like they do every other day and have done on Shrove Tuesday every other year.

"I think people just like saying mean things."
