Mum rages as neighbour lets herself into her home - but people think she's at fault

Nosy neighbours can be quite the nuisance. Even when they're well-meaning, it's a lot to find you're constantly opening the door to the same face. It's even worse if they take it upon themselves to walk inside your home whenever they fancy a visit.

Although this isn't quite so common a problem, it's the issue one homeowner has found herself facing.

As she explained in a post to Mumsnet, one of her neighbours loves to drop by without any prior warning, much to her annoyance.

Sharing her grievance on the platform's "Am I being unreasonable?" forum, she asked if she's out of line "to really hate unannounced visitors."

"I have a neighbour who will just walk in if my door is unlocked. If my door is locked she will just stand there and knock until I answer," she explained.

"She is unable to comprehend the fact that I might be busy. My mum thinks that I should drop everything for unannounced visitors."

In response, commenters were quick to agree they'd be annoyed by similar behaviour, though some struggled to sympathise with the mum on all accounts.

One such person replied: This is so easily resolved!

"Firstly, why on earth would you leave your door unlocked when you’re in? I assume you lock it when you go out, and all that’s there is material possessions? So why not lock it when there’s actual precious people in there?

"Secondly, I don't answer my door if I don't want to, which is most of the time."

However, when the mum replied she revealed all is not quite as it seems.

"I only had my door unlocked as I was having work done and the workmen were going to their van to fetch tools etc. My neighbour just walked in for a chat even though it was obvious that I was having work done," she explained.

Addressing the homeowner's other concerns, a different responder said: "I'm on the side of not having to be pleased to see unannounced visitors. I think it's actually quite rude to drop in on people and expect them to be happy and ready to receive you. I'd always want a quick text first so I could say yes or no."

Another added: "Ring, text or email first and get clearance. Or else you don't get let in. That's how we operate."
