Mum pierces foot after stepping on metal spike while walking dog

A mum pierced her foot on a spike during a night-time dog walk with her son.

Sophie Jade Ellison, from Netherton in Merseyside, was walking her dog on Glover’s Lane on Wednesday evening (August 18) when she stood on a huge metal spike .

Sophie said she had to physically pull her foot free from the spike, which was under a tree swing near to Netherton Activity Centre, reports the ECHO.

"I just went over with my son and dog to let him have a run around before bed,” she said.

“I was wearing slippers!

"It went straight through and the pain was unreal.

"I just don't understand how it's there, I take my dog there every day, my children play there every day, and I have never seen it before.

"I tried to pull it out the ground but I couldn't.

"It was horrendous, one of the worst injuries I have ever had.

“Luckily I'm up to date with my tetanus jabs."

Sophie says that she is feeling the aftermath of the injury today and her foot is still sore.

She added that walking on it is still “extremely painful”.

Sefton Council says the rope swing has now been removed and the area has been made safe.

A spokeswoman said: "We’re sorry to hear of the incident near to the Netherton Activity Centre involving one of our residents.

“As soon as we were made aware, we deployed officers to survey the location.

“It is understood that a rope swing had been erected in the area by local residents which has now been removed in the interests of health and safety.

"Officers also checked the ground area for any further hazards and are satisfied that the area is now safe.

“Our communities can be assured that we take their wellbeing extremely seriously and would remind them that we have an array of managed and maintained leisure and recreation facilities available for their use right across the borough.”
