Mum pens heartbreaking tribute to 'sweet baby' son who took his own life on Arran

The devastated mum of a teenager who took his own life says she is living every parent’s “worst nightmare” in an emotional online tribute to her son.

His mum Mandy Hunter said he was a “clever, kind, generous, amazing son’ who had “such a bright future ahead of him”.

Mandy uploaded a moving public Facebook post alongside childhood photos of Fireun who loved camping and the great outdoors.

She wrote: “My beloved youngest son. My sweet baby. What I wouldn’t give to hold you in my arms again and tell you how much I love you. 

“I wish there was something, anything I could do to get him back, to change the past and erase whatever it was. I so regret that I didn’t tell him how much I loved him and how proud I was of him, every single day till it was etched deep into his soul.

“In recent years he seemed so positive, mature, sensible and happy, that his suicide has come as a great shock to his whole family.”

She said Fireun was an impressive public speaker and excelled at sports.

Mandy wrote: “He could achieve anything he put his mind to. He had so much to live for yet he chose to leave us all behind. He was a unique free spirit and now his spirit is flying free.” 

Fireun leaves behind his father Ercan Simsek, his brothers Johnny MacLean, Kai Masia and Sercam Simsek and his sister Maya Maclean.

The teenager’s disappearance sent shock waves through the island’s close-knit community and sparked a major search involving police, mountain rescue teams and dog rescue volunteers.

Locals took to social media to pay their own tributes to Fireun and offer support to his devastated loved ones. 

One Arran local commented on Facebook: “My heart is breaking. Fireun was so caring. Lot’s of love to you all.

Another wrote: “Fireun was an amazing boy and touched so many people’s hearts.” 

A spokesman from Ayrshire Police Division said: “At around 5pm on Monday, April 1 the body of a man was found near Glanashdale Falls, Whiting Bay.

“The body is that of Fireun Hunter, 17, who had been reported missing from the Isle of Arran and had not been seen since 11.15pm pn Saturday, March 30. 

“There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death. His family are aware.” 

An Arran Mountain Rescue Team spokesperson said: “The team were called out on Monday afternoon to assist police with the search for 17-year-old Fireun Hunter in the Whiting Bay area.

“Sadly a body was located at around 5pm in the Glenashdale Falls area. 

“Our thoughts are with family and friends at this extremely sad time.”
