Mum paralysed from neck down in Turkish hospital after horror holiday motorbike crash

A mum-of-two was paralysed from the neck down in a horrific holiday motorbike accident.

Susan Havilan was riding on the back of a moped in the Turkish resort of Alanya when the vehicle collided head on with a bus.

The 48-year-old suffered devastating head and spinal injuries, as well a lung damage, Wales Online reported.

Now the Newport woman can only move her head.

To make matters worse Susan, who was on holiday alone, did not take out travel insurance.

"This is the worst thing that has happened to us as a family, it's a living nightmare," said her daughter Amy Jones, 27.

"My mum is a lively, bubbly person who would do anything for anybody. Now she's lying in a hospital bed and has no idea when she will get home."

Amy and her sister Chloe, 26, rushed out to Turkey to be by their mother's side.

"When we found out (what had happened) it was devastating," added Amy, who was told about the crash by a Turkish nurse.

"We tried to book the first flight we could out there, but this was at a time when Thomas Cook was going bust which made things even more difficult.

"She was in hospital alone for three days before we arrived. The conditions there are dreadful and it's so difficult trying to communicate with the doctors and nurses. We had to use Google Translate to find out the extent of her injuries.

"We've had to do so much for her, including buying her medication, changing her catheter and even getting food and water."

Amidst the grave concerns they have for their mother's health, the sisters are now confronted with a £30,000 bill to get her home.

They have set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for the travel costs.

"Our mother is the backbone of our family and we will do anything to ensure she is safe," Chloe wrote on the page.

"If everyone can come together and help us, this really gives our mum the best chance of a recovery. Although permanent paralysis is uncertain at least we can save her life."

Amy said that the driver of the motorbike, who Susan had met during the holiday, escaped with only minor injuries.
