Mum outraged by 'nasty and rude' Christmas present her mother-in-law gave her

Buying people joke presents for Christmas is a common thing, but the punchline usually only goes down well if the presents are exchanged between close friends or family that really understand each other's sense of humour.

And as one mum has found out, getting a joke present from someone you don't know all that well can leave you wondering whether they really are joking or if they're making a subtle dig at part of your personality or appearance.

The mum was left baffled when her mother-in-law gave her a cushion for Christmas with a joke printed on it that seemed to suggest she gave up jogging because of her weight.

She thought the cushion was poking fun at her weight (Mumsnet)

She explained she "used to run a lot" but no longer keeps up with the sport and believed her mother-in-law was "fat-shaming" her with the present.

The mum posted a picture of the cushion on Mumsnet, which featured the text: "I gave up jogging for health reasons … my thighs rubbed together and my knickers caught fire."

And in her post alongside the image, the mum said: "I don't really see partners mum as she lives a couple of hours away and she never travels. She came for Christmas lunch and this was my present. Am I being unreasonable in thinking she is fat-shaming me?

"Whenever she sees her slightly overweight son, she makes comments about how he looks pregnant. I used to run a lot, but I don't now."

Commenters on the post couldn't believe the gift the mum had received, with many claiming it was "nasty" and "rude" of her mother-in-law to give her the cushion - especially if they aren't close enough for the "joke" to have landed.

One person wrote: "That's just a straight-up insult."

While another said: "Yeah she's being rude! That would be going straight to the charity shop!"

And a third posted: "Wow that is a b****y present. Nasty."

In a follow-up post, the mum explained she threw the cushion away as soon as her mother-in-law left and agreed the gift was rude.

She posted: "I am overweight, I used to run a lot but stopped a few years ago. I put the cushion in the bin and I don't think I will see my mother-in-law for a while as I can't be bothered. She also never asks about my children who live with us. So why should I even bother; she's just rude."
