Mum on drugs stole bike and threw knickers in police officer's face

A mum-of-two in the grip of drug addiction stole a bike and was spotted selling it by the owner.

Natasha Brawn snatched the cycle from Frome railway station in February.

Bristol Crown Court heard she then sold it for £60, claiming she was doing so because she was having a knee operation.

But she was spotted offering the bike for sale and police were called.

Officers tracked her down and she threw her underwear and socks at a detention officer and urinated in a cell, Bristol Crown Court heard.

Brawn, 24, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to theft, fraud by false representation, assault and causing criminal damage.

Judge Euan Ambrose handed her a 12-month community order in which she must perform 100 hours' unpaid work, undergo up to 20 days' rehabilitation and abide by a six-week curfew in which she must stay at a new address in Frome from 7pm to 7am on electronic tag.

The judge told her: "Since being remanded in custody from the beginning of July you have been able to get clean of drugs.

"You are currently clean and resolved to turn your life around."

Clare Fear, prosecuting, said when Brawn was searched she threw clothing into a detention officer's face.

When interviewed she admitted stealing the bike to make some money.

Lucy Taylor, defending, said her client was a domestic violence victim who left the relationship and had wanted to feel "numb".

Miss Taylor said Brawn had turned to heroin to try and deal with her difficult emotions but was now clean and had no intention of relapsing.

Miss Taylor told the court: "She has accommodation to go to.

"She is hoping to get back into work as a chef. She is embarrassed and sorry for what happened.

"It was acquisitive, opportunistic offending. She saw a bike unlocked and took it.

"When assaulting the police officer she was frustrated and agitated and withdrawing from heroin."
