Mum-of-two left with human waste and raw sewage strewn across garden for days after flash flooding

A mum-of-two has serious concerns for the health of her children after raw sewage and human waste was left strewn across her garden following flooding last week.

Serena Campbell, who lives in Beckley Road, Broxtowe, says her garden was completely submerged during the flooding on Wednesday, June 17.

Once the water receded, the 36-year-old said piles of human waste and toilet paper were left smeared over the grass and patio.

Severn Trent Water only dispatched a worker on Friday (June 19), but Ms Campbell says they only partially cleared away the waste on the day, leaving her with a garden full of sewage over the weekend.

"I started to get worried when I saw human waste floating around the back garden," the complaints worker told Nottinghamshire Live.

"I called Severn Trent Water and they did not send anyone until Friday. They said there was a blockage and the sewage all over the garden was the worst one they had seen.

"The smell was horrendous. I've been housebound waiting but no one has come out, nothing has been disinfected."

Ms Campbell, who has two daughters, J'adore, 13, and Paris-Anay, seven, said she had never experienced anything like it in the 10 years she has lived in her home.

Numerous towns were flooded on Wednesday evening when torrential rain lashed the region, including Beeston and Ilkeston where homes were also submerged in sewage water in just 17 minutes.

A pile of brown dirt and sewage has been left in Ms Campbell's garden for four days, and her newly laid artificial grass has been left in tatters.

She added: "It flooded everything.

"Everything was covered and then when [it receded] that's when we saw all the sludge.

"It's not just a case of sweeping it out, [Severn Trent] seem to have just put it on the back-burner.

"They said they will need to take away the stone gravel due to contamination. What made it worse is that we had just put down some new artificial grass."

Severn Trent Water said they will be sending personnel out today (June 22) to clean the garden.

A spokeswoman said: “We’re extremely sorry to Ms Campbell, as we know just how devastating any kind of flooding can be.

"Our teams attended to the report of flooding last week, and have since cleared a blockage on our network, that was made worse by the heavy rainfall.

"With the pipe now clear, our teams will be returning today to do a full clean up at the property making sure that everything is back to normal as quickly as possible.”

Nottinghamshire is now set to be scorched by a mini heatwave from Wednesday, June 24, with highs of 29C.
