Mum-of-two escapes house blaze with 'just the clothes on her back'

A mum-of-two was left nothing but the clothes on her back after fire ripped through her home while she slept.

Leah Ennis, 29, managed to escape the blaze at her home in Bootle. Fortunately her two young daughters were not with her at the time as they were staying with their dad.

Pictures show the gutted interior of the house in Essex Way following the blaze, which Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service say was believed to have started accidentally.

Leah's cousin Kristy Collins said: "She went to sleep to be woken in the early hours of the morning to orange flames in her bedroom.

"She managed to escape unhurt, luckily enough her two little girls were with their dad.

"All she has is the clothes on her back."

Leah was taken to hospital for assessment following the fire, while a police officer who was also at the scene was checked out by an ambulance crew.

Kristy has now set up a fundraising page for Leah and her two girls - Eliza-Livvy, aged seven, and Elisia-Lee, five - after they lost all their personal belongings in the blaze.

Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service said they were called to the house fire in Essex Way, Bootle, in the early hours of Tuesday (May 11).

A spokesperson said: "Crews were called shortly after 4am and three fire engines were sent to the scene.

"On arrival crews found a fire in the first floor bedroom of the property.

"Six firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the property and used hose reel jets to extinguish the fire.

"All occupants of the property were outside when crews arrived.

"Two people were assessed at the scene by North West Ambulance Service. One person was taken to hospital for further assessment.

"It is believed the fire started accidentally.

"Fire crews left the scene at 8.07am."
