Mum-of-two, 38, died after 'rare complications' from cancer she had seven years ago

A mother-of-two died after 'rare complications' from cancer she had seven years ago.

Alana Shaw was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2013 and was saved after a successful course of radiotherapy.

But, after she was passed away in May this year, an inquest ruled it was the radiotherapy that contributed to her death.

Alana, 38, from Bowdon, had pain in her lower abdomen after going for a run last year.

Scans at the hospital showed 'no evidence' that the cervical cancer she had in 2013 had returned but after her symptoms got worse, more investigations were carried out.

Within weeks she was diagnosed with mesothelioma - a type of cancer in the lining of the body's organs.

It is usually linked to being exposed to asbestos - a fiber-like material that was used in building work.

Alana's partner Steven Peel wrote in a statement, read at her inquest at Manchester Coroners' Court on Tuesday, that she had worked her way up from a cashier to a financial adviser and could not 'pinpoint' any links to working with asbestos.

The coroner, Zak Golombeck, also read a statement from her oncology doctor, Dr Taylor, at Wythenshawe Hospital, where she died on May 15 this year.

Dr Taylor said that mesothelioma can develop 20 to 30 years after being in contact with asbestos - but he didn't believe she had ever been exposed.

Instead, he thinks the radiotherapy to her pelvis - that cured her carcinoma of the cervix in 2013, had triggered the cancer in 2020.

He said it was a 'rare complication' with cancer patients.

Concluding the evidence, Mr Golombeck ruled that the radiotherapy 'contributed' to her death.

He gave a narrative conclusion and said she had died from 'recognised complications of necessary treatments'.

Her cause of death was diffuse peritoneal mesothelioma and carcinoma of the cervix.

He added: "I find that mesothelioma was contributed to by the radiotherapy and not by asbestos exposure."

He also gave his condolences to her father, Andrew Shaw - who appeared by video link at the inquest.
