Mum-of-three found dead in bed by friends who worried after not hearing from her

A woman found dead in her bed by friends was suffering with tuberculosis, an inquest has heard.

The friends of Karyn Williams had gone to her Neath home after not hearing from the 51-year-old for a couple of days – something that was said to be “unusual”.

An inquest at Swansea Civic Centre heard paramedics were called to the property but Ms Williams was pronounced dead at the scene.

The concerned friends of the deceased had gone to her flat in The Ropewalk in Neath town centre on July 30 this year and let themselves in with a spare key.

They found the mother-of-three in bed and called the emergency services. Paramedics rushed to the address but Ms Williams was pronounced dead.

A subsequent post-mortem examination found the cause of death to be respiratory failure caused by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease which was itself caused by idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis – a type of chronic lung-scarring disease – and pulmonary tuberculosis.

The inquest heard obesity, hepatitis C, and cocaine were also listed as contributors but drug misuse was “incidental to her death and not causative”.

Ms Williams, who grew up in Neath, was first diagnosed with TB in 2018.

The assistant coroner of Swansea and Neath Port Talbot, Aled Wyn Gruffydd, recorded a conclusion of death by natural causes.
