Mum of terminally ill boy overwhelmed with support from ECHO readers

The mum of an eight-year-old boy who suffers from a terminal muscle-wasting disease said she had been "overwhelmed" by the offers of help received from generous well-wishers.

The ECHO reported last week about Toby Hartshorne, who is unlikely to live beyond his late teens or early 20s because he suffers from the condition duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD).

It means his muscles do not repair themselves and are progressively wasting away.

At the moment he can still walk, but as his condition deteriorates he will no longer be able to.

His mum Charlene, from Bootle, has set up a crowdfunding page on JustGiving  to try to raise enough money to get him an electric wheelchair and replace the self-propelled wheelchair he uses now.

But the story touched so many that offers of help also came in - including an electric wheelchair offered by a mum who had lost her own son, and an offer of boxing shorts signed by the four Smith brothers to be auctioned off.

Mum-of-two Charlene, 38, said: "I've been touched by how many people have come forward and offered help who don't even know Toby. It restores your faith in humanity.

"Toby is an amazing little boy. He never complains, he just gets on with it and always has a smile on his face.

"I've also made friends for life through Toby and his illness. For something that's so heartbreaking for me, it has still created some wonderful memories."

A keen amateur boxer herself, this weekend Charlene will be joining around 30 others from the gym where she trains to take part in a fund-raising walk in Snowdonia.
