Mum-of-seven dies just 24 hours after her wedding day following cancer battle

A mum-of-seven died just 24 hours after marrying her long-term partner.

Tragic Katrina Scott was just 32 when she lost her fight for light after a battle with liver cancer.

The care worker had desperately wanted to marry her partner of 10 years, Jay, and said her vows in front of friends and family on November 14.

She died at the Royal Derby Hospital the following day, Derbyshire Live reports .

Now her friends are collecting Christmas presents for her children to take the pressure off her husband.

She was mum to Callum, 13, Levi, nine, Tyler, 11, twins Kaitlin-Rose and Poppy-Mae, six and Lillie-Rose, seven.

She also has a 22-year-old step-daughter, Ayesha.

Jay, a builder and landscaper, said: "It's devastating. We worked well together, she always made everybody laugh.

"We worked very hard for everything we had as a family. She was very popular and had a big family."

Jay, 48, said his wife had been for a routine check-up in August but the pair had started to worry when the results didn't come back.

He said at the time the family were on holiday in Torquay, but said he "knew in my mind there was something wrong".

After a liver biopsy, Mrs Scott, nee Dakin, was told in September that she had stage four liver cancer which had spread to the lungs and bile duct, making it terminal.

Her husband said she went into hospital and passed away two months later.

Jay said: "She had always wanted to marry me but we never had the time or money to do it.

"My eldest daughter, Katrina's step-daughter Ayesha, set up a Just Giving page for our wedding.

"Our wedding was planned for November 25 but we had to move it because the doctors said she wouldn't make it.

"She fought until that day and died 24 hours later. But I've got pictures of her smiling, that's the main thing."

He said his wife had suffered from a bad back for more than three years, which "was the liver cancer the whole time".

Katrina, who worked at The New Lodge nursing home, in Mickleover, had dreamed of being a midwife.

Her husband said: "The day after we got married I had a funny feeling. I saw a rainbow from my house to the hospital and I thought, that's it.

"I went down to the hospital, to the Macmillan unit, and I knew it as soon as I looked into her eyes. It was so quick.

"Going to school to pick the children up, knowing what I knew, was the hardest walk of my life.

"They had already said goodbye to their mum which was very important."

Jay said his wife told him she wanted everyone to dress in leopard print for her funeral, which is being planned with the help of a Just Giving page.

He said: "She was in so much pain. I want her to have the best send off.

"Being a dad is a job I'm proud of. It's going to be hard but people's kindness and thoughts make a bad day a little bit better.

"That's how I will get through it. I'm a proud man and I don't ask for help, but her friends are keeping me strong."

Aimee Smith, a family friend, is collecting Christmas presents for the six children and Katrina's step-daughter, who is 22.

Aimee, a 28-year-old from Mackworth, said: "When it happened I went round and looked after the little girls for the weekend.

"I thought I could make an appeal for presents on Facebook .

"So far I've picked up a drone, two Frozen scooters for the girls and two Wiis. We've also written to Tesco who said they could give us a food hamper.

"To be able to give them a few presents with what they're going through will be amazing and will take some pressure off the family."
