Mum of Scots teen killed in cycling accident makes kind gesture to Grangemouth Sea Cadets in his memory

The family of a Scots teenager who was killed in a cycling accident have donated £8,000 in his memory to Grangemouth Sea Cadets.

Harley Smith, 16, died after he was hit by a car while cycling through Lauireston in Falkirk on November, 3 last year.

The teenager was cycling along the A803 on Polmont Road when he was struck by a Mercedes.

A GoFundMe page was later set up to help create a memorial for Harley, which raised £16,500.

The youngster was a keen cadet and his mum has given the generous donation to Harley's team mates to help them buy valuable equipment for the Grangemouth base.

In a post on Facebook, Grangemouth Sea Cadets and Royal Marine Cadets said: "As you are aware we recently lost one of our former cadets, Harley Smith in a tragic accident.

"Consequently his family set up a go fund me page to raise £100 to allow them to create a memorial for Harley. Donations kept flooding in & as a result the total raised was over £16,500.

"The family have decided to make some donations to charities and organisations that meant a lot to them & Harley. Our unit is fortunate to be one of the chosen charities to receive such a donation.

"I received a call from Joanna, Harleys mum, to say that the amount being donated to the unit is a staggering £8000 to purchase any equipment we need for the benefit of both our existing & future cadets.

"I am very humbled that the unit is so highly thought of by the family to give us a donation of this size, we truly are grateful. The equipment we will purchase will be a lasting legacy to Harley & his family."
