Mum of Scots public school pupil tortured to death by drug-crazed toff vows to fight killer's appeal

The mother of a man tortured to death by a drug-crazed aristocrat has vowed to keep her son’s killer behind bars.

Alex Morgan – who had a Scottish father and studied at Moray boarding school Gordonstoun – was killed by art gallery owner Bennett Von Vertes while on a skiing holiday in Switzerland in 2014.

Von Vertes, 32, is now appealing his conviction for manslaughter for bludgeoning Alex, 23, with a candelabra, stabbing him with glass and forcing a candle down his throat.

He is also appealing the 12-year sentence he was handed in November.

Alex, who met Von Vertes when they studied at university in London, suffered 50 blows to the head and body after meeting up with the aristocrat at his family’s chalet near Lake Zurich.

Alex’s mum Katja Faber vowed to fight the appeal bid and keep the killer locked up in a Swiss jail.

She added: “There is no punishment that will make right what was done.

“It helps me to sleep at night knowing he is behind bars. People as violent as Von Vertes should not be free to walk the streets.”

At Von Vertes’s trial, his lawyers argued he was suffering from psychosis after mixing sleeping pills, cocaine and ketamine.

Switzerland’s Supreme Court confirmed his lawyers planned to appeal.

Prosecutors will try to increase his sentence to 16 years for homicide, the rape of a woman on a separate conviction and a road traffic offence.
