Mum of one-punch attack victim Danny McGee opens up about son's tragic death

The mum of one-punch attack victim Danny McGee has said she couldn't believe it when she heard how her son had died.

The 21-year-old, from Longford, was died after being punched following a verbal row outside The Gaslight Bar in Queens, New York on Thanksgiving in 2018.

He was later found unresponsive and rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A 26-year-old Dubliner was caged for six months for the one-punch attack.

Steven O'Brien, with an address at 42nd Street, Queens, in New York, agreed to the sentence which was part of a plea deal in Queens County Criminal Court last November.

And speaking after O'Brien's sentence, Danny's mum Colleen McGee told how her family has been devastated by her son's death.

Speaking on RTE's Morning Ireland today, she said her son was a "wonderful, wonderful boy who brought us all fun and laughter."

Ms McGee said the support she was shown demonstrated "what kind of a kid he was", that "people just took to him - young, old, it didn't matter."

She added that hearing a not guilty plea at every court date was "very difficult" to hear, and "somebody is guilty of something."
