Mum of murdered sisters says 'sorry won't cut it' after police apologise for response

The mum of two murdered sisters says "sorry just won't cut it" after the Met Police apologised for their "below standard" response.

The Venerable Mina Smallman believes Scotland Yard failed to take responsibility for the failings, which led to family and friends searching for her daughters Bibaa Henry, 46, and Nicole Smallman, 27.

They were found stabbed to death in Fryent Country Park in Wembley, north London, last June.

The Met announced it will apologise to their family after an Independent Office for Police Conduct report found the response on the weekend they went missing was below standard.

But Ms Smallman said in a statement: "Sorry just won't cut it. It's too hollow. Especially as we await the IOPC report to be published, the sentencing of Danyal Hussein and the appearance in court of two Met Police officers.

"Sorry is something you say when you comprehend the wrong you have done and take full responsibility for it, demonstrating that by taking appropriate proportionate action - which the Met Police have failed to do."

Ms Smallman believes the force has failed to take appropriate action - claiming the initial missing persons call was mishandled and her two girls may have been victims of "racial profiling, misogyny or classism".

She added: "We're not the only parties who suffered mental anguish at the hands of the Met Police's incompetent, reprehensible and blatant disregard of agreed procedures regarding missing persons.

"It began with the call handler's inappropriate assertions, mishandling the call, which led to the cancellation of the missing persons alert.

"The inspector on the second shift made erroneous assumptions about the whereabouts of our daughters.

"We're also of the view that his unprofessional comments about Bibaa and Nicole's picnic suggest racial profiling, misogyny or classism.

Hussein, 19, was found guilty at the Old Bailey of the murders of sisters Bibaa Henry, 46, and Nicole Smallman, 27 (PA)

"There were approximately 14 people - friends and family - involved in our own Missing Persons investigation which started at approximately 4am on Saturday morning and ended with Nicole's precious Adam discovering their bodies. This lasting image of his soulmate will forever remain in his minds eye."

Speaking to the BBC's Today Programme he said: "If this was a 40-year-old professional white woman, I question whether we would have had the delay and difficulties we have had.

"If that was a white, woman, social worker reported missing... these people would have had more influence. So I'm not sure I agree with the [IOPC] analysis".

As a result of the IOPC report, an inspector, from the North West Command, and a member of police staff, a communications supervisor attached to Met Command and Control at Lambeth, must undertake "unsatisfactory performance procedures".

A call handler based at Met Command and Control at Hendon will also receive "management action".

No evidence of misconduct was proven and there was no suggestion of racial bias impacting the investigation in the IOPC report.

Commissioner Cressida Dick said: "My thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family and friends of Nicole and Bibaa for their tragic losses.

"The way we responded to information that Nicole and Bibaa were missing that weekend was below the standard we should have achieved and compounded the distress felt by their loved ones.

"While we know that very sadly Nicola and Bibaa had been murdered in the early hours of Saturday, 6 June 2020, before they were reported missing, if we had responded better we may have saved their friends and family immeasurable pain.

"I am very sorry that the level of service we provided fell short. We have contacted the family to ask if they will allow me or, if they prefer, another senior officer to visit them at a time that is right to apologise in person."

Danyal Hussein faces life behind bars after he was convicted of murdering Bibaa and Nicole at the Old Bailey on July 6.
