Mum-of-five stole toys for Christmas gifts after spending all her money on drugs

A homeless mum stole toys for her children's Christmas presents after she spent all her money on her crack cocaine and heroin habit, a court heard.

Amy Newport also stole toys from Tesco in Cleethorps, Grimsby, and smuggled them out using a basket and a blanket on November 15.

She did the same thing the following day - this time hiding her loot under her jacket, the Grimsby Telegraph reports.

The 29-year-old also stole items worth £123 from Asda on December 13 and items from two stores including Primark, on December 21.

"She has five children and she was anxious to give them toys for Christmas.

"That's what she attempted to do. They don't live with her."

Newport was given a 16-week suspended prison sentence, two days' rehabilitation and was ordered to pay £85 costs and a Government-imposed £115 victims' surcharge.
