Mum of eight calls for ban on anonymous online trolls

A mum of eight is calling for anonymous social media accounts to be banned in a bid to end trolling.

Marie Buchan says she has been the victim of online abuse by unknown commenters for years.

Marie, 39, from the West Midlands, told BirminghamLive that people online call her a 's***' and say they 'hope she dies'.

The commenters abuse Marie for the fact she has eight children and is claiming benefits.

Marie says she gets dozens of such messages every week from anonymous accounts.

Marie said: "Anonymity should be outlawed, although I am unsure whether that is possible given the sheer number of anonymous accounts on online platforms.

"But social media companies have a duty of care and should be taking this very seriously.

"I receive abuse every day from people who make up anonymous accounts and hide behind their anonymity. The abuse is of the sickest kind and it can really make me hit rock bottom.

"Some of the abuse is just vile. They call me a parasite, a s*** and say they 'hope I die soon'. They call me a prostitute and include sick references to my children.

"Others say I'm a 'scrounger' and I've had threats of men coming to get me and 'teach me a lesson'.

"It can be hell at times. It is very hard to read that stuff and horrible for the children as well. When you are feeling low it can really make you sink even lower."

She added: "It has got to stop. People don't understand the impact on someone who is in the limelight. I have contacted the police before due to the threats."

Marie's children are aged between 8 and 20. She lives in a housing association property and is currently looking for work.
