Mum lost her whole left ear because of tanning addiction

A mum was forced to have her ear amputated because of her addiction to tanning.

Following excessive sunbed use, Anthea Smith was diagnosed with melanoma after a spot appeared on her ear.

The 44-year-old underwent life-changing surgery; which saw her left outer and inner ear removed, along with her salivary glands, lymph nodes and a temple bone from skull.

She is now calling on others to not make the same mistakes she did.

Speaking to BBC's Staffordshire reporter Laura Mcmullan, Anthea, from Bolton, said: "Nobody should have to live with what I'm living with.

"All for a tan and the guilt that I feel to my husband and children.

"But really this was all self-inflicted, with no level of knowledge of the dangers.

"So people younger than me continue to use them I think not knowing any of these dangers."

Health experts say sunbed users have an increased risk of developing skin cancer.

Australia and Brazil have already successfully banned the use of commercial sunbeds in their respective countries.

And in July 2018, Melanoma UK launched a petition for the ban on sunbeds in the UK, which they plan on taking to the government.
