Mum living in humid house swears by £6 trick for keeping mould at bay

With the colder and wetter months creeping in, it means one gruelling thing for homeowners and tenants alike - mould. It will commonly creep on items throughout our home - from windows, bathrooms, and even behind furniture - and can have a serious impact on our health.

However, a woman living in a humid house has claimed that a trick using an inexpensive product has kept mould at bay within her home. Taking to video-streaming service TikTok, Amy - who boasts more than 12,000 followers on her account - shared the £6 method, which left viewers rushing to try out for themselves.

In her video, which has surpassed 78,000 views since posting, Amy explained that rubbing alcohol is "lethal on mould".

After trying other methods on the market - from anti viral sprays to anti fungal sprays - she believes nothing works quite as well as the product, which you can pick up for £6 on Amazon.

She explained: "We've got a very humid house and humidity in a house means mould nearly all the time. I see it again and again and again and again.

"I've had complaints from friends on Facebook saying 'I've got mould in my house, how do I get rid of it?'

"Mould is toxic, it's vile, and it's very very bad for you to breathe in.

"I've got an allergy to do it, but since I've moved here my breathing has been so much better because at my property we had a damp issue.

"This house we don't because I'm on top of it, but we also don't have a bad drainage system.

"I use rubbing alcohol this is 99.9% and this stuff is lethal on mould."

Amy explained that mould is prone to creeping onto furniture in her home, including the back of her daughter's drawers.

To date, no other products have worked quite as well as rubbing alcohol.

She explained: "I tried bleach, I tried anti viral spray, I tried anti fungal spray - you name it, I tried it.

"But I tried rubbing alcohol and it worked - this stuff has kept mould away and it does not come back."

However, Amy keeps on top of the mould prevention, claiming: "Every four to five weeks I get the rubbing alcohol in a little spray bottle and I just pull all of my furniture out and spray behind it and it keeps it at bay.

"Obviously, some people might say 'that don't work for me'. Sometimes it doesn't and that's ok.

"You will find what's worked for you - I'm just sharing my experience.

"If you've tried everything but you haven't tried rubbing alcohol then give it a go.

"It's also good at getting mould in bathroom's free as well," she added.

Rushing to the comments, TikTok users revealed that they were eager to try out the hack for themselves, saying: "I have tried lots of stuff, giving this a go, thank you."

"I'll try this one thanks," a second said.

One person shared a suggestion: "I use Astonish Mould spray on walls, paintwork. Works well. Also we use a dehumidifier from time to time."

"Open windows to circulate the air," a different used added.

Commenting on the effectiveness of the hack, Big Bathroom Shop 's bathroom specialist Rikki Fothergill explained: "Using alcohol is a proven method for removing mould and mould stains from smaller surfaces as it dissolves lipids and breaks down the substance.

"However, for more stubborn mould on larger areas like walls and showers. Consider using vinegar or even bleach for a more effective clean."

However, the product should be used with caution as it poses as a flammable risk.

Zac Hemming of ICE Cleaning said: "Rubbing alcohol is highly flammable, so using it to remove mould is actually quite dangerous."

The expert advised that you should consider seeking specialist services if you're dealing with a mould issue.
