Mum left in tears as trick or treaters give up their sweets for her child with cancer

In the build up to Halloween, mum Courtney Thomas knew her street is always a popular spot for trick or treaters to come knocking on the doors.

But with one of her children shielding due to cancer, the family knew they couldn't allow other kids to visit their home or hand out treats.

Courtney put a sign outside the house in Atlanta, US, in an effort to ensure no one was left disappointed, writing: "Sorry, no candy. Child with cancer. See you next year!"

During the evening, the doorbell camera caught footage of children who took notice of the message and didn't come to the door, but appeared to be visiting the sign instead.

When she went outside, she realised the children had been giving up their own stashes of sweets, leaving them under the sign in an effort to ensure Courtney's child didn't go without.

The incredible gesture left her in tears as she posted on Facebook to say: "I can't stop crying. If anyone thought there was no hope in our kids and teens you're wrong.

"The SOLE purpose of us putting this sign in our yard today was so kids wouldn't run to our door and be disappointed (our neighborhood usually gets 300-400 kids).

"I looked on our doorbell camera tonight and saw that kids had been stopping at the sign. [My husband] and I just went outside and found this.

"The picture doesn't do it justice, it's a LOT and the good stuff even.

"Seriously... If the parents of anyone who did this sees this, PLEASE tell them how much it means to us and our kiddos.

"On the best candy night of the year kids freely and generously shared with strangers and showed so much love and kindness. So amazing."

The post racked up more than 387,000 shares and 26,000 comments from around the world as one person replied to say: "This is love, and I'm here for it. This made my day. Love from Canada."

A second wrote: "That is so amazing of the kids who shared their candy."

Another commented: "Made me cry. This shows that there is still good in this world. Bless these children's kindness and prayers for this child and family."
