Mum launches special Remembrance parade for horses killed in World War One

A military mum and her comrades have organised a poignant Remembrance service to remember the eight million horses that died in World War One.

Former soldier Suzanne Fernando said the special parade would feature more than 20 decorated horses and riders. A number of World War One and Two re-enactors will also take part at the event in Saltcoats on Sunday November 10.

Ex Royal Military Police soldier Suzanne, 44, said: “There are a number of adult and children riders taking part. This has never been done before - it should be a great day.”

The parade - organised by the Saltcoats, Ardrossan and Stevenston Legion Branch - is due to arrive just before 11am at the Saltcoats War Memorial. Members of the public have been asked to gather at 10am on Hill Street, Saltcoats for the start of the parade.

As well as being a military hero, Suzanne beat cancer and is Scotland’s first Cancer Research UK Ambassador and a qualified cervical cancer support group leader. She was diagnosed with cervical cancer at the age of 28 while expecting Aaron, her second child.

She has her own awareness group and travels the country telling women about the importance of smear tests and helping women fight the disease.

Suzanne was nominated as the Record’s Community Hero at the Our Heroes awards in 2015.
