Mum knew instantly when she woke from coma that car crash had killed her baby son

A mum who woke from a coma after a horror smash killed her baby boy said she "knew in my heart" her son had died.

Five-month-old Louis Thorold died and his mum was left seriously injured after a crash involving a van and a car saw one vehicle veer into the infant's pram.

Tragic mum Rachael Thorold, 36, had been pushing her baby boy on a pavement when they were both struck by a Renault Master van that had come off the road.

The smash in Waterbeach, Cambs in January left Rachael fighting for her life and in a coma.

She was reportedly in a coma for ten days and drifted in and out of consciousness for more than a month.

Now, as her recovery continues the Mail Online reports that a date has been pencilled in for her to return home from hospital.

Speaking to the publication she recalled waking up and realising what had happened.

She said: "I remembered being pregnant. And because there was no baby I realised I must have lost him. I knew in my heart he had passed away.

"I’m determined to come home before summer although I know it will be hard. The whole house is fully absorbed in Louis."

Speaking in an earlier interview about the tragedy with ITV News husband and Louis's dad Chris Thorold said: "It's genuinely devastating, I just feel sad all the time to be honest.

"I don't think that anybody can understand how devastating it really is for everybody involved and not just me but for Rachael.

"We can't do anything to bring Louis back, he was such an amazing little boy, him and Rachael were just completely inseparable and never spent a moment apart."

Chris has also gone on to campaign to improve safety on the A10 at Waterbeach through the Louis Thorold Foundation.

The charity aims to reduce infant pedestrian road deaths to zero and has secured a promise from Cambridgeshire County Council to improve the road where Louis was killed.
