Mum in tears as she reveals 14p in her pocket is all she has in the world

A homeless mum has emptied her pockets to reveal the 14pence that is all she has in the world during a BBC report ahead of the General Election.

Rachel invited the BBC into the temporary accommodation she shares with her teenage son as she made her way back from a food bank in Grimsby.

Emptying her pockets to reveal the sum total of her finances, Rachel had four 2p pieces and six 1p coins. She said: “That’s all our money”, reports GrimsbyLive.

Asked about her biggest concerns, Rachel wept as she said: “Making sure my son is fed and has a roof over his head for the time being.

“If I didn’t have him I wouldn’t be here. I know I wouldn’t. It’s because of him I’m still here.”

The BBC visited Grimsby to investigate high levels of poverty as we head towards choosing a new Government next week.

Reporters looked at people using food banks and community shops to survive in modern Britain.

Rachel says none of the politicians deserve her vote. She said: "They don’t get, they don’t understand, what it’s like to be without.”

Another single mum, Lucy, told the BBC she and her children curled up in blankets and “sobbed” because they couldn’t afford heating.

Pam Hodge of the Rock Foundation food bank said Grimsby was getting “worse every year” as it battles poverty and unemployment.
