Mum hurt at partner's 'cruel' ultimatum before he will agree to marry her

A mum has told how her partner has given her a 'cruel' ultimatum if she wants him to marry her.

The mum-of-two says her partner says he will only marry her 'when she loses weight'.

The woman says they have been together for nine years and have two children but her man refuses to put a ring on it until she is slimmer.

The mum says she thinks she is around one stone over weight and only gave birth to their second child six months ago.

She says her partner made the nasty comments in front of her friend and left her feeling humiliated and unsure whether she ever wants to marry him at all.

Taking to Mumsnet to ask for advice, she said: "A friend came round last night and we got talking about someone we know who had just got married.

"Friend said to me in a lighthearted way, “when is it your turn” to which dp (darling partner) said “I’ve told her I’ll propose when she loses weight” He has said this to me in the past, but I let it go over my head at the time. But as he has said it again, he must really mean it which hurts a lot.

"I’m in two minds as to whether I am over reacting. One part of me thinks it may be his way of ‘trying’ to spur me on to lose weight and in his mind thinks he’s giving me a kick up the a*** and trying to be helpful. Or whether he’s being a total d*** and I should consider if I want to be with him let alone marry him.

"My weight doesn’t affect my health at all. No health issues. We have been together 9 years, live together and have 2 children. I had DC2 only 6 months ago.

"Friend didn’t say anything at the time, I could sense she felt a bit awkward but after she left she text me to see how I was. Overall, the relationship I thought was ok. But now obviously I’m having doubts about everything.

"According to bmi, I am 1 stone heavier than I should be. I don’t complain as I am fairly happy with how I look. I know being 1 stone heavier than I should is not ideal, but in time I will focus on losing it."

Hundreds of fellow mums came out in support of the woman branding the man as 'nasty' and 'a total d***'.

One said: "Wow, he said that in front of your friend?! That incredibly cruel.

I understand that he thinks he’s giving you a good incentive, and maybe it’s coming from the right place, but he’s really going about it the wrong way and I’m not surprised that you feel hurt. I would feel very embarrassed that it was said in front of your friend too."

"He's being a total d***," said another.

A third said: "WTF have I just read. He’d be straight out of the door."

Another offered some advice, saying: "Lose 11 stone of useless flesh instantly by dumping him."

"Oh, honey, no. You deserve so much better than this. He sounds absolutely vile," sad another.

Another mum agreed: "Very inconsiderate for him to say that and hurtful, it says to me he doesn't care about your feelings."

Another mum said: "So......Once you lose weight, you'll have earned the ultimate prize of....him?

"No. So, now you're good enough to warm his bed, but not good enough to fully commit to? Will your weight loss be a condition of your marriage too?

"What happens after you get married if you gain weight again? What if you get ill, or get in an accident? He's clearly comfortable putting conditions on your relationship."

One mum said the man's comments were "deeply wrong". She said: "His statement is so deeply wrong.

"A proposal is an affirmation that he wants to be with you forever. He's saying he only wants to marry you if you're thinner. How nasty."
