Mum hits out at Tesco for 'propagating nonsense' with blue face coverings for 'boys'

Tesco have come under fire from a parent in Nottingham after she and her child spotted an issue with a packet of blue face coverings in one of their supermarkets.

Sarah Louise, 43, was shopping with her daughter, Mara, at a Tesco branch in Long Eaton on Sunday (September 20) when they spotted "casual stereotyping" on a product.

The pair came accross a pack of three of dark blue face coverings featuring a football design, which were being sold for £3.50.

The mum says the packaging specifically states that the item is meant for boys aged four to eight years old.

She went on to claim that her nine-year-old daughter was left baffled as to why they were intended for boys and not girls as well.

Sarah has since accused the retailer of "propagating nonsense" because of the packaging.

The full time carer took to Facebook to raise her concerns, in a post that garnered a lot of attention.

Alongside a snap of the product, she wrote: "I was in your shop in Long Eaton at the weekend with my family and we spotted these 'boys' face masks at the till.

"My daughter wondered what made them suitable for her brother, but not for her. I had no good answer to give her and wondered if you could help."

Sarah continued to explain: "I commented on it, and my daughter raised her eyes and asked why not for girls?

"She knew it was just a stereotype, which is a bit sad at nine years old.

"I think casual stereotyping like this is just a small reflection of a bigger problem.

"It reinforces perceptions that certain sports and occupations are for girls and others are for boys."

She added: "I felt nothing overwhelming after seeing it, just a bit irritated and sad to see a large brand, who should know better, propagating this nonsense.

"No-one really put much thought into it, it wasn't malicious, but I think it's important to challenge these sorts of stereotypes."

A Tesco spokesperson said: "We want everyone to feel welcome at Tesco and after receiving customer feedback we have decided to change the packaging for this product.

"We are sorry for any offence caused and are grateful to our customers for sharing their thoughts."
