Mum hits out at school's blazer policy after child came home 'dripping in sweat' in hot weather

A mum criticised a school's "outrageous" uniform policy after her daughter came home 'dripping in sweat'.

The girl, a pupil at Sale High School in Sale, Trafford, told her mum she had not been allowed to take her blazer off and that only a few teachers allowed pupils to remove them in class, with others saying it was school policy to wear them at all times. The mum, who did not want to be named, said her daughter returned home feeling ill when the weather was particularly hot.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, she urged schools to drop the strict rule. The parent said: "As a health worker myself I think it's disappointing that schools aren't taking the children's health seriously. I think it's outrageous that children across the UK are having to wear blazers in schools with temperatures expected to reach highs of 27 degrees.

"My daughter came home dripping in sweat, dizzy and feeling sick, only for me to learn she's not allowed to take a blazer off in and around school grounds, and to add to this only a selection of teachers allow it in the classroom."

She said blazers should be optional if the weather is hot, and pointed out that even teachers were wearing summer clothes while children were in blazers for over six hours.

After the issue was raised with the school by parents, pupils were told on Thursday that they could take their blazers off. But the mum wants the policy at Sale High and other schools to change to avoid similar situations in the future.

"They have finally agreed that blazers can be taken off, however I feel this shouldn't just be a one-off, it should be a set policy across all school settings", she added.

In Sale High's list of uniform items parents are expected to buy, it says: "Navy school blazer with Sale High School badge (compulsory item to be worn at all time)." The Manchester Evening News has contacted the school for a comment.
