Mum hits out at ghouls who filmed death of her son in Arbroath

A devastated mum has hit out at ghouls who filmed the murder of her son on a street and posted it online.

Frankie Melvin died at the scene when he was stabbed in Arbroath on Wednesday night.

A man appeared in court yesterday charged with murdering the 34-year-old father-of-four.

It emerged that bystanders had filmed the horrific incident and posted the footage online, where it has been shared dozens of times.

Frankie’s mum Dawn Reid condemned those responsible and friends hit out at them for standing aside when they could have helped him.

She said on Facebook: “Can I ask the people who videoed my son getting killed, why did you feel the need to share with the world? You’ve not thought about his boys, have you?”

Dawn’s furious friends backed her up and called for those responsible for the film to be investigated.

One wrote: “It’s totally disgusting that anyone can video something like this. They need to face some sort of hard punishment too.

“It’s just not right. What human can video something
like this and not help or call for help?

“It’s just sad that people out there are like this and to share around is pathetic. I hope they get some punishment as they deserve it.”

Another added: “That’s just awful. Why would anyone rather film it than phone for help?

“They should also be charged, we all have a duty of care to everyone around us… you are all going through more than enough without having to deal with this.”

Frankie, a former pupil at Menzieshill High School in Dundee, had four young sons.

He was declared dead at the scene of the incident near a pedestrian underpass in Spitalfield Place, Arbroath, at about 6pm on Wednesday.

Frankie’s family yesterday said he was “a much loved son, father, brother, partner and uncle”.

They added: “His loss will be sorely felt by many.”

Detective Inspector Allan Thomson asked anyone with information to call police on 101 and urged people to watch what they say online.

He added: “Our thoughts are with the family of Mr Melvin at this difficult time.

“There will continue to be a visible police presence in the area as we carry out our inquiries and I would like to thank the community in Arbroath for their patience and support.

“Please do no post any comments on social media which could prejudice any future criminal proceedings.”

Jackie Doig, 41, of Dundee, appeared at the city’s sheriff court yesterday charged with Frankie’s murder.

He is accused of assaulting Frankie before pursuing him and repeatedly stabbing him on the body with a knife.

He made no plea and was remanded in custody. The case was continued.
