Mum has four children under one after having triplets

A couple who struggled to conceive for years have now welcomed four children under the age of one.

Vickie O'Donnell and her husband Jamie from South Wales were thrilled when they welcomed baby Phoenix last year.

But the pair were left stunned as they went for a 12 week scan earlier this year and found out they were expecting triplets.

Vicky was left in tears at the news, after struggling for years to have a baby partly because of her polycystic ovaries - reports Wales Online.

She said: "I was screaming. At first the woman said it was twins, and I said 'I think you should look again because if it is twins what is the other one?' And I was just sobbing."

Groundsman Jamie said: "Oh f*** was my first thought, then I thought what have I let myself into, in a joyful way.

"I'm relieved it has finally happened for us and over the moon. We couldn't be happier."

The triplets - girls Rhubie-Ann Rose and Violet Mary and boy Tarney -were born at 33 weeks on June 16 at Cardiff's University Hospital of Wales, seven weeks before their due date in August - weighing 4lb 5oz, 4lbs 1oz and 4lb 2oz, respectively.

Vickie, 27, said: "It is mad to think that this time last year I was pregnant with Phoenix and now I have four babies.

"It was Jamie's first Father's Day on Sunday, Phoenix was still in my belly last year, and now they're all here! He was beaming, he was like 'How many men can say they have got four babies'.

"It was meant to be, I absolutely love it."

Despite being born over a month premature, all babies are well and healthy and did not require any extra help breathing - just clearing of their airways.

They have now been transferred to the Prince Charles Hospital (PCH) in Merthyr Tydfil where they are only being monitored for feeding, as it is recommended premature babies are tube fed until they reach what would have been the 35th week of pregnancy.

Vickie said: "They are doing amazing and they are such good weights, even though they are tiny they are doing so well. They are starting bottle feeds now, hopefully it won't be long and they can come home."

Mum Vickie is also doing well, having gone through major surgery to deliver the babies.

She was discharged three days after giving birth and stayed at the Ronald McDonald house to be close to the triplets for a few days before returning to be with Phoenix.

Vickie is now getting used to the feeling of no longer being pregnant, with her belly now shrunken back to its normal size.

She said: "It feels weird, it has just gone, I felt like I was learning to walk again from where I must have been holding myself differently when I was pregnant. When I was coming around from having them and we were back up in our room I was like I can see my feet! I can see my legs for the first time in months!"

Vickie and Jamie hope the triplets will back home with them in the next few weeks - just in time for when their older brother Phoenix turns one.

The plan is for Rhubie-Ann Rose, Violet Mary and Tarney to sleep in the same cot while they are small enough, and they will work out the logistics of where and how they sleep when they get bigger as they come to it.

For now, Vickie is focussed on getting the babies home to meet Phoenix as soon as is safe to do so.

She said: "I've been on FaceTime to him when I've been with the babies up the hospital, and he goes 'awww baba'. I can't wait to see them all together."
