Mum furious after finding cereal in Sainsbury's that's a whole year out of date

A mum was disgusted to find a packet of cereal that had expired more than a year ago in her local supermarket.

Maria Freeberne found the cereal with a stamp revealing it was more than one year out of date at the Sainsbury’s in Ripley, Derbyshire.

She had gone to pick up a box of Oatibix Flakes on December 5, when she noticed the label looked different, reports Derbyshire Live .

The box was stamped with a best before date of September 9, 2018.

Ms Freeberne, of Derby, said she immediately raised the alarm with a member of staff.

The pottery worker said: “There were two boxes on the shelf. They were a bit battered, I picked them up to make sure it was the right one and that’s when I noticed it was 15 months out of date.

“It’s not something you normally look at with cereal.

“Sometimes you find one thing that is a couple of days out of date and that’s just been missed, but there were only two packets on the shelf.

“I worked in retail for years and you know you have to rotate the stock. At the end of the day you have to pull the stock forward, how it wasn’t picked up is crazy.

“I don’t think for one minute that it will kill you, but I don’t think they should be on sale.”

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “We appreciate this being brought to our attention and can reassure customers this was an isolated case.”
