Mum fuming at £70 quote for Christening cake but parents brand her 'ignorant'

A mum has been blasted as 'ignorant' after complaining that she was quoted £70 for a Christening cake.

The outraged mum said she was stunned at being told a sponge cake with four layers of buttercream icing would set her back £70 and extra for any novelty toppers.

Posting on Mumsnet, she said: "F****** 70 quid for a cake? Quoted 'from' 70 quid for a Christening cake.

"This was based on a 6" square cake with 4 sponge layers. Not tiers. Buttercream icing.

"Any decs toppers etc would be extra and from 8 - 15 quid!Am i missing something?? How the f does a cake cost that much?"

But while the mum thought this price was excessive, other women commented in their droves to tell her that was average for a professional cake.

One mum's message was simple; you get what you pay for. She said: "I paid £120 for a two tier themed cake for my DS birthday. It was amazing and worth every penny.

"If you want a bog standard cake get one from the supermarket or M&S."

Another said: "Same reason it costs more to pay a hairdresser rather that cut your own. You want professional standards, you pay for them."

Another former baker asked the woman why she wanted people to work for minimum wage.

She said: "Sorry but I used to be a baker....would you be prepared to work for less than minimum wage??? If not, why expect a baker too? Equipment and training comes at a strap price. Can’t believe people are still this ignorant!"

Another added: "My god, is it not the same as any other service? I’m sure you could get your next door neighbour to have a look under your bonnet but would you trust him instead of a qualified mechanic?!"

Another said: "The reason a cake costs £80 when the ingredients are only a fraction of that is the same reason that a hand knit sweater costs a lot more than a ball of wool. Because you're paying for a skill."

However not everyone agreed with some mums saying £70 for a single tier cake was too much.

One said: "I got quoted £150 for a birthday cake last week - I didn’t even reply to her message!"

Another added: " I'd only pay that much for an epic themed cake, like the whole of Hogwarts intricately done!"
