Mum forced to fork out £4k on furniture after flat plagued by mould

A family allege they were forced to throw away over £4,000 worth of furniture, clothes and even a TV as their home was plagued by mould.

Mum-of-two Dilkash Wishyar shared horrifying images of the black damp covering her walls and covering a wardrobe in her two-bed home.

Though the mould in the Walsall property has since been treated by Walsall Housing Group, the mum states that the damp in the property continues to leave the carpets soaking and is 'affecting their health', as reported by Birmingham Live.

She said: "It's everywhere. It is all about damp and mould.

"My little daughter many times, comes into my room after midnight two o'clock, half past one and says 'oh what is happening here, I can't breathe because it smells really bad'.

"I say 'what can I do?' I can't leave the windows open every time because it's cold. I don't know what can I do? It's too much."

Wishyar first noticed the mould in her kitchen back in 2018, but it only began spreading "everywhere" the following year.

"I reported it and one time one staff came to take a picture but he did not come back to me.

"in 2020, I was told I was lucky to have a two bedroom, I don't see why I am lucky because I have two kids and one small bedroom and one not too big, normal bedroom, they say yes you are very lucky, because ten people are in one room in other homes.

She added that she had spent "more than £4,000" on replacing furniture, clothes, shoes, rugs, plates, TV, sofa, bed, wardrobe, drawers.

"I am not having a good job, I'm not working, how am I supposed to every month or two months time, throw out, for example, two months ago, I had to throw out one big three seater sofa and one two seater."

She claims the damp in the property has caused her to suffer health problems including migraines and depression.

"It's not good for me, I'm not worried about myself, but about my kids.

"Inside the carpet is wet. My bedroom, my kids bedroom, the water comes in."

"I called the manager, I said: 'Please come, we are in very very bad situation, I am not good.'

"'If you are not coming to help us, It's very bad for us.'

"I'm saying, 'look what's happened to me, I can't breathe all the time I have headache'.

She claims she has tried strong bleach to clean the mould, but nothing works.

Walsall Housing Group said it had carried out 'remedial work to remove the mould' in December last year and stressed that the majority of images were historical.

Further work is scheduled to 'improve insulation' in the block as early as Spring, a spokesman added.

Rob Gilham, Corporate Director of Business Strategy and Assets, said: “We don’t want to see any of our customers living in these conditions and are doing all we can to ensure Miss Wishyar feels happy and comfortable in her home.

“We have been working closely with our customer to address any issues at her home and carried out remedial work to remove the mould in December 2021. These photos provided by the customer were taken several months ago before we had the opportunity to carry out this treatment.

“Work is scheduled to improve the insulation of the block and we anticipate this will start in Spring/Summer. We are also updating the storage heaters to a more modern and cost efficient alternative in the next few weeks. This is part of a wider programme of work– over the next eight years we will be investing £42.5m to ensure all our homes have a minimum energy rating of C.

“We are keeping in regular contact with the customer and her family to support them where we can.”
