Mum finds hidden messages under wallpaper of new home

A family was delighted to find hidden messages and drawings underneath the wallpaper of a new home.

Rachael, 37, who asked only to be referred to by her first name, was redecorating her house in Wallasey last weekend when she uncovered the artwork on the wall of her son's bedroom.

Rachel said she had encouraged her children, aged eight and four, to draw their own pictures and write a message alongside them.

The old drawings were timed and dated as 5pm on Saturday, June 20, 1998 and signed by Jess and Steph Fletcher.

Rachael said her children were delighted by the find (UGC)

Rachael said: "We absolutely could not believe it when we saw the top part of the message, we called [the children] up and half expected my eight year old old to think it was a trick!

"They both raced up and there was more and more every time we peeled a bit away. They couldn't believe it! From 23 years ago."

After sharing photos of the drawings in a community group on Facebook, Rachael managed to track down twin sisters Jessica and Stephanie, who drew them back in 1998.

Stephanie said: "I remember my dad was redecorating and he called us in and said 'do you want to draw on the walls before the wallpaper goes on?'

"As a kid you're like 'yes! I get to draw on the walls that's amazing' because usually that's a no no.

"At the time my dad told us 'whoever redecorates in the future is going to see this.' Once we did it we forgot about it for 20 years."

Stephanie and Jessica were 10 years old when they did the drawings, which Stephanie said have brought back fond memories of growing up at the house.

Now aged 33, Stephanie works as a professional artist and lives in Preston.

She said: "It made me feel quite old but it was really nice. It was something I'd forgotten about.

"That was our childhood home and I really enjoyed growing up there."
