Mum faces 100 lashes after protesting against death of demonstrator son

A grieving mum reportedly faces 100 lashes after protesting against the death of her son who was shot a demonstration over the rising price of fuel.

Iranian mum Mahboubeh Ramezani, mother of 18-year-old Pejman Gholipour, was arrested on July 11 and is being held in the infamous Evin prison in Tehran.

Pejman was shot in the heart by security forces during deadly protests over the rising price of fuel in 2019.

Mahboubeh has never stopped calling for justice, reports say.

Her surviving son, Peyman, said the Iranian authorities have 'constantly intimidated' her for it.

Ramezani has been sentenced to 100 lashes by the Iranian regime which she will serve following her arrest, according to the Middle East Eye.

Peyman, commented on Instagram, saying: "My mother was under pressure for a long time. They constantly intimidated her, and she had been summoned several times.

"What do we have to lose after Pejman? What is left after November 2019? They were looking for an excuse to silence my mother.

"Her only crime is seeking justice. This is the most important reason they fear her. They fear her because she has not even put down Pejman's picture for a moment."

Mahboubeh was originally arrested in November last year after attending an event in the village of Malat, where Pejman was buried, to mark the anniversary of his death.

Evin prison, which mostly holds detainees facing security charges, has long been criticised by Western rights groups and it was blacklisted by the U.S. government in 2018 for "serious human rights abuses".

"The (Evin) authorities use threats of torture, threats of indefinite imprisonment and torture of family members, deception and humiliation, multiple daily interrogations lasting up to five or six hours, denial of medical care, and denial of family visits," Human Rights Watch said in a report.
