Mum 'driven out' of her home by fly infestation from abandoned house next door

A mum has expressed her disgust after an empty house next door became infested with insects.

Karen Evans-Armitage, 56, says the home on Wavertree, Liverpool, has been empty for a "long time" and says their are 'at least a hundred' blue bottle flies in there.

The primary school teacher claims the problem is so bad passersby have even knocked on her door to express their concerns, the Liverpool Echo reports .

Pictures from the home show dozens of flies on the window and blinds of the abandoned terraced home.

Karen says she and her husband are living "at the end of their nerves".

The situation has gotten so bad that she feels like the flies are "driving her out" of the home she has lived in for nearly 30 years.

Karen said: "It has been empty for a long time and we've had the odd fly.

"But in October I was on holiday and my daughter was here and she rang to say that she had seen a rat in the window which freaked her out.

"She rang environmental health and they said they would do something.

"I don't know if they did or didn't, I'm not sure if they put pellets down and that's what's bringing the blue bottles.

"A few months ago there were a lot of blue bottles in the window about December so I rang environmental health and they said someone would ring me back but I never got anything.

"Three weeks ago they were back and I rang again and they said there was a file but the bloke would ring me back in the next couple of days."

Karen once again contacted Merseyside council on April 1 but it said it had no record of her being in touch since the rat sighting in October.

She said: "The only record she had was October when my daughter rang. [They] said they don't know who the property belongs to but it's worse - people are knocking all day.

"I took the day off because I didn't feel too good but I'm feeling ill with it and this is something I never do.

"People were knocking all day to tell me about it. I called our local councillor and he was getting in touch with someone else but no one is getting back to me.

"I'm living on my nerves. It's absolutely horrible. This has driven me out. Next door the other one is empty now. The houses are both abandoned either side of me. I've lived here since 1990 and I'm at the end of my tether. "

Liverpool City Council about Karen's complaint and they confirmed her case is "being looked into", according to the Liverpool Echo.

A spokesman for the local authority said: "If we can establish the owners of the property next door to Mrs Evans-Armitage then there are a series of actions the council can take."
