Mum divides the internet asking why 'mummy wine culture' is ok and smoking cannabis is not

A mum has divided opinion after revealing she smokes cannabis when her children are sleeping.

The mother asked fellow-mums "Am I an awful parent?" before confessing to smoking the illegal substance after her kids go to bed.

But the mum said while she knew her question would generate a lot of hate, she asked why "mummy wine culture" was acceptable but "smoking a joint or two" was "seen as neglectful"

Posting on the popular mumsnet discussion forum, she said: "I know this will probably generate a  lot  of hate either way, so name change.
"I occasionally, smoke a joint or two to help unwind.

"I have a physical disability which affects my joints and muscles. I'm a long term smoker from my youth but have dramatically cut back since having my DC.

"I see so much 'mummy wine culture' and having a bottle or a few glasses in an evening and this is totally acceptable, but, smoking a joint or two is totally different and deemed, 'neglectful, outrageous and automatically a druggy'"

The woman went on to say her parents smoked the drug when she was growing up.

She added: "Am I an awful parent? Is it seriously not that common anymore?
"My parents smoked it when I grew up so did DH's, a lot of our friends have or still do."

Her post split opinion with some mums saying her smoking could 'directly impact' her children, and others saying she was running the risk of her children watching her be arrested.

One mum said: "The wine culture doesn't directly impact your kids. They don't sniff wine and get high. They can smell the drugs and it can damage them."

Another said: "The only thing I can say for definite is that it’s illegal, so the children are at risk of witnessing you getting arrested."

Other accused the mother of being "emotionally absent" through smoking weed.

One said: "Regardless of the liberal arguments around drug use and the comparisons to drinking wine, the crux of it is your dependant child deserves better than a parent who is absent emotionally through weed: distracted, at increased risk of psychosis and spending significant sums of money on drugs."

Another said: "I think wine culture is awful and I think regularly smoking is a terrible role model."

"You’re buying drugs OP, obviously that’s bad parenting," added another

Another said: "Are you looking for a pat on the back to make you feel better?"

However other parents agreed with her and said it was no worse than having a glass of wine.

One said: "An occasional joint is no better or worse than enough-to-feel-merry alcohol."

"If you’re incapacitated and responsible for children, that’s not good, whatever the cause," said another.

A third said: "I don’t see an issue as long as you don’t do it while you are watching over the kids and more importantly, if you are growing the weed yourself."
