Mum disgusted after finding Weetabix a year out-of-date in Sainsbury's

A mum has been left disgusted after finding cereal in Sainsbury's that was more than a year out of date.

Maria Freeberne discovered the out-of-date Weetabix at the Butterly Hill store in Ripley when she went shopping on December 5.

The 50-year-old realised the label on the Oatibix box looked different to normal.

The box was stamped with a best before date of September 9, 2018, DerbyshireLive reports.

Ms Freeberne, from Derby, said she immediately raised the alarm with a member of staff.

The Denby Pottery worker said: "There were two boxes on the shelf. They were a bit battered, I picked them up to make sure it was the right one and that’s when I noticed it was 15 months out of date.

"It’s not something you normally look at with cereal.

"Sometimes you find one thing that is a couple of days out of date and that’s just been missed, but there were only two packets on the shelf.

"I worked in retail for years and you know you have to rotate the stock. At the end of the day you have to pull the stock forward, how it wasn’t picked up is crazy.

"I don’t think for one minute that it will kill you, but I don’t think they should be on sale."

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: "We appreciate this being brought to our attention and can reassure customers this was an isolated case."
