Mum dies in fire after pouring petrol over herself 'to scare cheating husband'

A mum erupted in flames after she poured petrol over her body in a bid to "scare" her cheating husband, an inquest has heard.

Ambreen Hussain, 35, was holding a lit piece of paper when she caught fire in the back yard of the family's home in Middlesbrough.

Her husband of 15 years, Mobeen, frantically tried to extinguish the flames with water and his bare hands, Teesside Live reports.

The horrifying incident was captured by the home's CCTV cameras, and footage showed the mum dousing herself in petrol intended for a child's scooter before she suffered burns to more than 90 per cent of her body.

Mrs Hussain was rushed to Newcastle Royal Victoria Infirmary after the incident on November 13 last year, but died four days later.

A post-mortem found that she died of multiple organ failure due to burns affecting more than 90 per cent of her body.

Teesside assistant coroner Jo Wharton said she couldn’t be satisfied the mum intended to take her own life, and recorded a verdict of misadventure.

CCTV footage showed Mr Hussain coming to his wife’s aid and wrapping his arms around her in an attempt to put out the flames, said Acting Detective Inspector Jeremy Commons, of Cleveland Police, in a statement.

He said there was “no indication that his wife was going to do what she did".

It didn’t look like the flame had made physical contact with Mrs Hussain’s body, ADI Commons added.

Mr Hussain, who attended the inquest, said in a statement read out by a coroner's office that he and his wife started having problems in their marriage about six months before she discovered the affair.

On the day of the fire, the couple argued and Mrs Hussain went into the kitchen.

Mr Hussain said he saw his wife “pouring something over herself” and then she “instantly set on fire”.

The husband, who continues to receive treatment for hand injuries, said: “It was all just a blur - I was trying to put the fire out with my own hands.

“I do not think she meant to set herself on fire - I think she was just trying to scare me.”

Mrs Hussain, described as a “much-loved wife, mother and daughter”, was "angry" after the argument, the coroner said.

The coroner said: “It was petrol that Ambreen poured over herself in the back garden.

"She then went into the kitchen and came back out, when she had in her hand a white piece of paper, alight.

"She poured more petrol over herself and suddenly became engulfed in flames.”

To record a suicide verdict, the coroner said she had to be satisfied Mrs Hussain took her own life and intended to do so.

Recording a misadventure verdict, she said: “Her death was attributed to an accident that occurred due to a risk that was taken voluntarily.”
