Mum charged with murdering daughter, 5, found stabbed to death

A mum has been charged with murdering her five-year-old daughter.

Sutha Sivanantham, 35, is accused of killing Sayagi Sivanantha, who died in hospital after being stabbed in Mitcham, south London in June.

She will appear via video link at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court today.

Police were called to an address on Monarch Parade at 4pm on Tuesday, June 30 to a report of two people injured.

Officers attended and found a woman and a girl suffering from knife wounds.

A post-mortem examination held at Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital on Friday, 3 July, gave cause of death as stab injuries.

Neighbour Elsa Gonzales found the pair inside a flat in Monarch Parade back in June.

At the time she described hearing screaming and crying coming from the flat next door, where the family-of-four from Sri Lanka lived.

"I saw the woman lying on the floor in a pool of blood," she said. "There was blood everywhere.

"I looked on the bed and saw the girl, she was covered in a blanket."

Mrs Gonzales, who has lived at Monarch Parade for 12 years, said: "It's really breaking my heart, the child was a smart kid, she was always smiling.

"She was a cheeky little girl, always playing with the neighbourhood kids."

Speaking in June Superintendent Richard Smith, from the Met’s South West Command Unit, said: “Today a family are grieving for their little girl, and we are doing everything we can to support them.

"This terrible incident has left a family distraught and the local community in shock.

"I would like to pay tribute to the police officers and ambulance service colleagues who responded to this frightening situation and thank them for working so hard to try and save Sayagi.

"She will remain in our thoughts.”
