Mum causes alarm after sharing 'shrew ice cream' recipe suggestion for overheated cats

There's nothing like a delicious bowl of your favourite ice cream in the summertime, and many of us will enjoy a wackier flavour every now and then.

However, even the most adventurous of foodies will no doubt gag at the words "shrew ice cream", a combination many would never have even considered.

One woman has now thought up this not exactly refreshing sounding recipe for her cats, after having clocked "a mouse corpse behind the bin."

With her two cats hot and bothered in the heat, she began to wonder whether she could whip up some dead rodents with cream in her ice cream maker, as a feline-friendly, sugar-free treat.

Taking to Mumsnet with a question one user described as "the most disgusting thing I’d ever read on Mumsnet", the woman pondered whether or not she could "make ice cream from shrews."

The unnamed mum - who goes by the username Bwix - "The cats need a treat on a day like this. My boy cat looks very hot and bothered. Girl cat has brought us four shrews already and I found a mouse corpse behind the bin, which smells relatively fresh.

"Do you think the cats would like it if I froze them, perhaps mixed with a bit of cream? I know they can't taste sugar, so I was thinking of boiling cream and leaving the shrews to infuse at that stage, then making a sugar-free traditional custard (albeit shrew flavoured) and putting that in the ice cream maker."

Given that the shrews would already be dead, she didn't feel as though she was doing anything wrong. However, a number of people just weren't too keen on the idea at all.

One person shuddered: "But you’re going to put it in your ice cream maker? That you use for human ice cream as well?! You have a stronger stomach than me."

Another commented: "Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should… And I’m not sure I’d be wanting any of the next batch of vanilla that came out of that ice cream maker…"

Others were actually pretty impressed with her imaginative approach to pet food, with one person declaring, "you are a genius and my cats want to move in with you."

However, various fellow pet owners advised steering clear of shrews and cream, warning that cats are actually lactose intolerant, advising instead to try making a batch of cooling "fish sorbet" instead.
