Mum brands Morrisons 'unsafe' after visiting 'rammed' store and is now using Tesco

A mum-of-four has branded Morrisons 'unsafe' due to the lack of social distancing taking place in the stores.

Sarah Russell, 34, visited the Maidstone  branch on Saturday and was shocked to see the lack of social distancing taking place.

The supermarket has put in place a series of measures across its stores in response to the virus, including staggered entry, front-of-store marshals, and informational floor stickers.

However, Sarah, who lives in Shepway in Maidstone, says it isn't enough and she does not feel comfortable shopping there any longer.

She told KentLive: “It’s like Christmas Eve in there, it’s rammed. No-one’s got any particular direction they’re going in, they’re going wherever they feel like. It’s hectic.

“My anxiety goes through the roof, absolutely through the roof. Even just in the queue for the till, people just don’t keep their distance.”

She continued: “It’s a big branch but there are too many people in there at a time.

“You can’t stay two metres apart in there, you can’t do it at all. You’ll be in one aisle and you’ve got someone coming straight towards you.

Sarah has now switched to shopping at Tesco in Larkfield due to its one-way aisle system.

She said: “It’s amazing, I can’t praise them enough. They have got a one way system and everyone does follow it.

“You go in and you’ve got arrows telling you which aisle to go up, which aisle to go down, so you literally cover the store all flowing the same direction.”

Sarah made a complaint to Morrisons on Facebook, criticising the lack of a one-way aisle system and describing the experience at the front door as a free for all.

A Morrisons staff member replied: “I’m really sorry about this. We continue to review this important area as part of our commitment to keeping our colleagues and customers safe.

“There’s always a Morrisons colleague at the front door to give our customers a warm welcome and act as a marshal, managing queues and asking customers to avoid entering the store in larger groups.

“The cleaning station is moved to the front door so our Morrisons colleague, who should be supported at all times by a security guard, can also offer customers the opportunity to clean their trolley with blue roll and sanitiser as they enter the store.

“Through these improvements and our social distancing ambassadors, we’ve the right signage, messaging, queuing areas, floor markings and ongoing spraying of trolleys to welcome customers to a clean, hygienic and safe shopping experience every day.

'I’m really sorry you feel these are not being implemented in store and I’ll be sure to pass your comments on so this can be reviewed going forward.”

A spokesman for Morrisons said: “We have introduced social distancing measures to help staff and customers adhere to the rules in our stores.

"You can find more information about these measures on our website."
