Mum blasts hospital after seeing 'blood, syringe packets, and dirty masks' in waiting room

A mum has blasted the state of a hospital waiting room which appeared to have been left with dried blood, syringe packets and dirty masks sprawled across the floor.

Halli Dee, 33, said she was disgusted at the state of the room after taking her vulnerable teenage daughter to Stepping Hill Hospital, in Stockport, Greater Manchester, on Boxing Day.

Her daughter, Tori Dale, has three kidneys and was thought to have picked up an infection when her mum took her to the hospital's A&E department on Sunday evening.

The mum, from Offerton, said she was shocked to find unhygienic hospital paraphernalia in the waiting room she and her daughter had been asked to use.

Pictures also show a scrunched up hospital gown on a chair, a dirty mug left on a table, and a bin overflowing with empty packets.

"We attended Stepping Hill and she got seen straight away by a nurse and then we were taken to a room in A&E and asked to wait," Halli said, speaking to the M.E.N.

"At first they weren't going to let me in with her but I told them she suffers with anxiety and I needed to be with her. It's lucky I did because the room was disgusting and I wouldn't have wanted her there on her own.

"There was blood on the floor, face masks, syringe packets that had been opened and there was no sheet on the bed.

"My daughter has three kidneys so she is vulnerable - she could have caught anything from there."

Halli claimed it took staff 10 minutes to come and clean the room, after she raised concerns that it wasn't suitable for her daughter.

"I had to help them clean it. I was wiping the chair with hand sanitiser," she said.

"It was one of the nurses that had to come and clean it. I was very concerned that they didn’t have a cleaner there. It was disgusting.

"My daughter was in so much pain so I was trying to get it done quickly so that she could lie down."

Halli said her daughter was given the option to spend the night in hospital on an IV drip but chose to go home.

"She said 'mum, I can't stay here, it's disgusting,'" she said.

A spokesperson for Stockport NHS Foundation Trust, which run the hospital, said that they understand "the room in question was only in this condition very briefly during an extremely busy time at our emergency department."

"It should nevertheless not have happened and we apologise for not meeting our usual high standards on this occasion," the spokesperson added.
