Mum blasts council after son found dead inside padlocked flat

A mum whose dead son was missed by workmen who padlocked his flat has hit out over the blunder.

Council chiefs pledged to review procedures after epilepsy sufferer Michael Stewart, 32, was accidentally locked inside.

But Jane Grant insisted the council had told her the flat had not been checked first and said: “It’s a disgrace.”

Police found the remains of dad-of-one Michael, 32, weeks after his death.

Man charged after dad-of-three found dead in Glasgow home

They forced entry to the flat in Aberdeen on Friday, March 8, after a call from Jane, who lives in Yorkshire.

It emerged a workman had secured the flat in Balnagask Avenue, Torry, in February after complaints about a broken lock barrel.

Jane said: “The council have stated the property was not checked before they padlocked my son in.

“They have only now decided to update the policy – every one will now be checked. It should have been policy from the word go.”

She said she holds the council accountable for the error.

Aberdeen City Council said procedures to secure properties “believed to be vacant” were being updated.
