Mum blasted for 'corny' baby name idea that 'sounds better for a puppy'

Choosing a name for a baby can be difficult, and parents-to-be can expect to receive all sorts of feedback from those they share their all-important baby name list with. One mum has now come up against a number of decidedly less-than-positive opinions after reaching out for thoughts on a name she's been mulling over for her second child.

The name in question is 'Shine', and a number of people have begged her to drop it from her list, arguing that although it would be 'cute for a puppy', it just wouldn't be appropriate 'for an adult human'. Some were put in mind of the clothing brand Shein, while others enquired whether Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher would be announcing the child's arrival.

Taking to Reddit, the expectant mum, who goes by the username u/WorrySquirrel136, asked fellow users for their thoughts on the name Shine, enquiring whether they thought it was 'too hippy dippy'.

She wrote: "I feel like many people name their second baby in a more playful way. I don't necessarily want to do this as I think it makes it seem like the firstborn must somehow bear more weight in seeming more serious.

"I don't know if I’ll have a second child right now but I love thinking about names. Is Shine too light of a name? My firstborn has a classic name."

The vast majority of those who responded weren't too keen on the name at all, encouraging her to forget it completely, or just use it as a middle name instead.

One person commented: "Cute for a puppy, not good for an adult human in my opinion. Actually, I still find it kinda corny on a puppy, but that's a lower-stakes situation."

Another suggested: "Shine is not a name. Cassandra means 'To Shine' and Zara means 'Brilliant, Shining, Bright'."

A third remarked: "I'm usually more gracious to unique names than most on this sub but Shine sounds like a cleaning product in my opinion."

Taking the feedback on the chin, the unnamed mum responded to say she would now be ditching Shine, and was now in favour of the names Callum and Florence instead.
